Swelling & Bruising Management

Swelling & Bruising Management – Post-Surgery Care for a Smooth Recovery

Managing swelling and bruising is a key part of the recovery process after facial surgery. While some degree of inflammation is completely normal, proper aftercare can significantly reduce discomfort, promote faster healing, and help you achieve your final results more quickly.

Whether you've undergone jaw reduction, cheekbone contouring, chin surgery, or facial implants, following the right steps during recovery is essential for minimizing side effects and protecting your surgical outcome.

What to Expect After Facial Surgery

Swelling and bruising are most noticeable in the first 3 to 7 days following surgery and will gradually subside over the next 2 to 4 weeks. Some residual swelling may last longer, especially after bone-related procedures, but it typically becomes less visible over time.

Mild tightness, numbness, and asymmetry are also common during the early stages of healing.

Tips for Managing Swelling and Bruising

  • Cold Compresses: Apply a cold pack or ice wrap for the first 48–72 hours after surgery to help reduce swelling. Always use a barrier (like a cloth) between your skin and the ice to avoid frostbite.
  • Keep Your Head Elevated: Sleep with your head elevated on pillows, even during the day when resting. This helps prevent fluid accumulation in the face.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to help flush out excess fluids and toxins from the body.
  • Avoid Salt and Spicy Foods: High-sodium meals can increase water retention, which may worsen swelling. Stick to a soft, low-sodium diet during the initial recovery period.
  • Gentle Movement: Light walking improves circulation and reduces the risk of fluid retention.
  • Follow Prescribed Medications: Your surgeon may prescribe anti-inflammatory medications or recommend supplements like arnica or bromelain to support healing.
  • Avoid Heat & Sun Exposure: Excess heat can increase swelling. Stay indoors or in a cool environment, and use sun protection if you go outside.
  • Compression Garments: If provided, wear your compression band as instructed to support healing and minimize swelling.

When to Be Concerned

While swelling and bruising are normal, you should contact your surgeon if you experience:

  • Sudden, excessive swelling
  • Sharp or worsening pain
  • Signs of infection (fever, warmth, discharge)
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing (in cases involving the jaw or neck)

Your surgical team is there to support you throughout your recovery and should always be contacted if anything feels unusual.

Healing Is a Process—Support It the Right Way

Post-operative care is just as important as the surgery itself. With proper swelling and bruising management, you'll not only feel more comfortable, but you'll also help ensure a smoother recovery and the best possible aesthetic results.
