Genioplasty (Chin Surgery) in Seoul

Achieve a Balanced Profile with Personalized Chin Contouring

Genioplasty, or chin surgery, is a facial contouring procedure designed to reshape the chin for improved facial harmony. Often performed for aesthetic reasons, this procedure enhances the appearance of a recessed, protruding, asymmetric, or unbalanced chin by altering the bone or adding volume through implants or fillers. While primarily cosmetic, genioplasty can also support functional improvements in facial symmetry.

Both plastic surgeons and oral & maxillofacial surgeons may perform this procedure. Because it is elective, it is typically not covered by health insurance.

Types of Genioplasty

There are two main types of genioplasty: sliding genioplasty and chin implant surgery. Each method can be tailored to suit individual anatomy and aesthetic goals.

Sliding Genioplasty

Sliding genioplasty, also known as osseous genioplasty, is a surgical procedure that involves cutting and repositioning the chin bone to adjust the chin’s projection or length. This technique is ideal for patients with severe chin recession (retrogenia), an overly prominent chin, or vertical chin concerns. It allows for forward, backward, upward, downward, or even asymmetric adjustments to achieve a more balanced look.

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. A small incision is made inside the mouth to access the chin bone. The surgeon then cuts and repositions the bone, securing it with titanium plates and screws. If needed, they may remove a wedge of bone or leave a space to lengthen the chin. The incision is closed and protected with compression tape to support healing.

Chin Implant Surgery

Chin implant surgery involves inserting a synthetic implant to reshape, enhance, or project the chin. Implants can be made of silicone, teflon, or porous materials like Medpor, which allows tissue to integrate naturally. The implant is sculpted to fit the patient’s anatomy and secured to the bone with medical screws. The incision is made either inside the mouth or beneath the chin.

Nonsurgical chin enhancement using dermal fillers or fat transfer is also an option for those seeking temporary results with no incision or downtime.

Recovery and Aftercare

For both sliding genioplasty and chin implants, the recovery process is generally manageable:

  • Oral antibiotics may be prescribed for a few days
  • Stitches inside the mouth are usually absorbable
  • A soft or liquid diet is recommended for several days
  • Mouth rinsing after meals helps prevent infection
  • Compression tape or dressing is worn for 3–5 days
  • Most patients return to daily activities within a week
  • Avoid exercise for 10 days and contact sports for 6–8 weeks

Common side effects include mild swelling, bruising, and discomfort. These typically subside within a week. You should contact your provider if you experience fever, persistent swelling, abnormal drainage, or signs of infection.

Potential Complications

Though complications are rare, they can include:

  • Infection
  • Numbness or nerve sensitivity
  • Allergic reactions to implant materials
  • Implant movement or extrusion
  • Screw exposure

Careful surgical planning and proper aftercare help minimize these risks.

Genioplasty Cost in Korea

The cost of genioplasty varies based on the surgical approach, materials used, and overall complexity. On average, the price ranges from ₩5,000,000 to ₩9,000,000 KRW (approximately $4,000–$7,000 USD). Factors affecting cost include:

  • Whether bone reshaping or an implant is used
  • Surgeon’s experience and clinic reputation
  • Use of general anesthesia and facility fees
  • Additional procedures performed in combination

As a cosmetic procedure, it is generally not covered by insurance.
